This bill establishes the California Student Teacher Support Grant Program, which awards grants to teaching credential candidates to compensate them while they perform required student teaching. The grants are equal to the daily substitute teacher rate for the local educational agency. The program is administered by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing and requires participating agencies to have a criminal background check process in place. To be eligible, local educational agencies must require teaching credential candidates to pass a criminal background check and meet certain criteria, including completing 600 hours of clinical practice. The program is funded by a one-time appropriation by the legislature and requires annual reporting to the legislature.
