What AB 1309 does, verified March 9, 2026

This bill aims to improve compensation for firefighters in California by requiring the state to pay within 15% of the average salary of corresponding ranks in 20 listed fire departments. The state and the firefighters' union will jointly survey annually to calculate the average salaries. The department of human resources will conduct a cursory survey on salaries and benefits for 5 listed fire departments by January 1, 2027. The bill considers the salaries of comparable jurisdictions and other factors when determining compensation for uniformed firefighters. Any salary increase must be implemented through a memorandum of understanding in accordance with collective bargaining agreements.
