AB 1897: Mentally disordered offenders: criteria for commitment.

This bill aims to amend the criteria for committing mentally disordered offenders to treatment. Currently, a prisoner with a severe mental health disorder must be treated by the state if a psychiatrist or psychologist and a chief psychiatrist certify they pose a danger to others. The bill would require that the mental health professional only opine that the prisoner poses a danger to the health and safety of others. The prisoner would be required to undergo a specific assessment before being committed to treatment.
