What AB 1940 does, verified August 25, 2026

The bill aims to add perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause to the definition of sex under the California Fair Employment and Housing Act. This expansion would include related medical conditions, providing greater protection for women experiencing these symptoms in the workplace. The bill requires the Civil Rights Department to update its poster on discrimination in employment by July 1, 2027, to notify women of their rights and protections in regard to these conditions. The updated poster would explain workplace protections applicable to employees experiencing menopause-related symptoms. Additionally, the Office of Community Partnerships and Strategic Communications would be required to raise awareness of the employment rights of women experiencing perimenopause, menopause, or postmenopause by July 1, 2027, through public education materials and campaigns.
