AB 2089: Property taxation: welfare exemption.
This bill aims to simplify the process of claiming the welfare exemption for property used exclusively for rental housing and related facilities. The county assessor will now accept electronic signatures for materials necessary to claim or maintain the exemption. Additionally, the county must provide documentation requirements on its website and release forms related to tenant income necessary for the exemption by November 15th of each year. The bill also extends a benefit to properties that have lost the welfare exemption due to changes in ownership or management, allowing them to continue paying property taxes with a reservation of tax credits or award of funds. This benefit will be available for property tax installments from December 10, 2027.
