AB 271: Crimes: looting.
This bill aims to strengthen penalties for looting during a state of emergency or local emergency. It would make looting punishable as a felony instead of a misdemeanor or a year in county jail. The bill would also require a minimum jail term of 90 days for petty theft committed during this time. Additionally, the bill would impose penalties for impersonating a peace officer, firefighter, or government employee while committing looting. The bill would also exempt the state from reimbursing local agencies and school districts for certain costs related to the bill.
