Assembly BillChaptered/SignedElections
AB 5: Elections: official canvass.
What AB 5 does, verified December 7, 2025
This bill requires elections officials to finish counting all ballots, with certain exceptions, by the 13th day following an election. Elections officials must release a vote count for those ballots within that timeframe. If an official cannot meet the deadline, they must file a notice of extension with the secretary of state, including the reason for the extension. The state will reimburse local agencies and school districts for costs mandated by the state if the commission determines that the bill contains such costs.
