AB 872: Environmental health: product safety: perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

California · Assembly · 2025–2026 Regular Session · last verified February 3, 2026

What AB 872 does, verified February 3, 2026

This bill aims to improve product safety in California by regulating perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in consumer products. Beginning January 1, 2028, it prohibits the distribution, sale, or offering for sale of products containing intentionally added PFAS unless the state has issued a regulatory response. Manufacturers can petition the state to evaluate their products. The state must analyze and comment on PFAS in industrial processes and products, identify and categorize commercially active PFAS, and report on related issues. The bill also requires the state to enforce existing restrictions on PFAS in products and ensures compliance with those regulations.
