AB 878: Victims of abuse or violence: reasonable accommodations.

California · Assembly · 2025–2026 Regular Session · last verified December 13, 2025

What AB 878 does, verified December 13, 2025

This bill requires landlords to provide reasonable accommodations to tenants who are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or other specified acts. If a tenant requests a lock change due to abuse or violence, the landlord must respond within 5 calendar days. If the landlord cannot grant the request, they must engage in a good-faith process with the tenant to find a reasonable accommodation. The landlord may request certification from the tenant to verify their status as a victim, but must keep this information confidential. The bill also prohibits landlords from retaliating against tenants who request reasonable accommodations and provides for liability for damages if a landlord violates these provisions.
