Relative to Student Cancer Education, Detection, and Prevention Week.
LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST
HR 131, as introduced, Muratsuchi.
WHEREAS, Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death among people of all ages, and early education and awareness are critical tools in the fight against this disease; and
WHEREAS, Young people, including students, benefit immensely from increased awareness about cancer risk factors, prevention strategies, early detection methods, and available resources for support and treatment; and
WHEREAS, Education can empower students to make healthier lifestyle choices, such as avoiding tobacco, practicing sun safety, eating a balanced diet, and being physically active, that may significantly reduce their risk of developing cancer; and
WHEREAS, Many forms of cancer, when detected early, have higher rates of successful treatment and survival, highlighting the importance of informing students about early warning signs and the value of routine medical care; and
WHEREAS, Student Cancer Education, Detection, and Prevention Week will serve as an opportunity for schools, colleges, community organizations, health professionals, and families to come together to promote cancer education, encourage preventative behaviors, and support those affected by the disease; and
WHEREAS, Engaging students in age-appropriate discussions about cancer not only fosters awareness but also helps reduce stigma and build compassion, resilience, and community action; and
WHEREAS, It is in the interest of the State of California to support the health and well-being of its youth by fostering a culture of proactive health education; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the Assembly proclaims October 11, 2026, through October 17, 2026, inclusive, as Student Cancer Education, Detection, and Prevention Week; and be it further
Resolved, That the Legislature encourages middle schools, high schools, colleges, public health agencies, pediatricians, and community health providers to promote comprehensive educational campaigns on topics related to cancer prevention and detection, including risk factors, warning signs, evidence-based prevention strategies, and the importance of timely screenings and diagnostic evaluations; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
