SB 1246: Autonomous vehicles.
The bill aims to regulate the operation of commercial autonomous vehicles in California. To operate without a human driver, remote assistants, remote drivers, or local incident technicians must be located within the United States and hold a valid California driver's license. The ratio of remote assistants or remote drivers to autonomous passenger service vehicles must be at least 1 to 3. Commercial autonomous vehicles must have a manual override system that allows local incident technicians, first responders, and trained personnel to manually steer, brake, and relocate the vehicle during an emergency. The operator must provide training and written guidance to local incident responders and towing providers.
