Politics.AISB 266: Elections: language accessibility.
The bill aims to improve language accessibility in elections. By December 15, 2029, and every subsequent year after a presidential election, the secretary of state must determine the number of residents in each precinct who are members of single language minority groups and lack English skills. The secretary of state will post a list of languages used by these groups on the website. Elections officials must provide ballots, ballot identification envelopes, and notices in the language of applicable language minority groups starting January 1, 2030. The secretary of state will translate notice, instructions, and voter statements to verify or provide a signature. County elections officials can select translators or interpreters with experience in translating official documents, referred by a nonprofit organization.
