SB 45: Recycling: beverage containers: tethered plastic caps.
The bill aims to promote beverage container recycling in California by requiring manufacturers to ensure that plastic beverage containers with caps are tethered to the container, preventing the separation of the cap from the container when removed by the consumer. This requirement will take effect on January 1, 2027. The bill also exempts certain types of containers, including those with high recycling rates, containers over 2 liters in capacity, and containers containing beer or other malt beverages. Additionally, refillable containers and manufacturers that sold or transferred fewer than 16 million containers in the previous year are exempt from the requirement.
