California · Senate · 2025–2026 Regular Session · last verified February 3, 2026

What SB 818 does, verified February 3, 2026

This bill aims to protect public health and safety in the county of El Dorado by expanding a human-mountain lion conflicts program. The department of fish and wildlife must maintain and enhance the program, which includes exercising authority to authorize nonlethal procedures. A grant program will be established to assist with equipment and measures to protect livestock and domestic animals, and to minimize mountain lion attractants. Scientific research will be conducted to develop methods to deter mountain lions from communities and prevent habituation. Public outreach activities are required. The program will be expanded into regional programs, and a report must be submitted to the legislature by October 1, 2030. The director of fish and wildlife must provide a status update on the programs annually until 2033.
