Senate BillIntroducedPublic Resources
SB 940: Geologic Energy Management Division: New Technology Program: oil and gas wells: geothermal wells.
What SB 940 does, verified June 1, 2026
The bill would amend the Public Resources Code to expand the definition of "geothermal resources" to include oil or gas reservoirs used for thermal energy storage or geothermal energy generation. This expansion would increase the regulatory authority of the state oil and gas supervisor over these types of resources. The bill would also make refusing to permit inspections or violating regulations related to these resources a crime. No reimbursement is required for the costs associated with this bill.
