What A 1047 does, verified March 6, 2026

The bill aims to improve police accountability by requiring police officers to report misconduct. It establishes a standardized protocol for handling and recording mandatory reports of misconduct, which includes provisions protecting officers from retaliation. The protocol also requires the use of a standardized incident report form. Police officers are required to report suspected misconduct, including excessive force, to their agency, which must then forward the report to the division. Failure to comply with this requirement is considered a crime and can result in termination and criminal charges. The bill also creates a new crime of failure to report misconduct by a police officer, which is a class D felony. This change is intended to encourage police officers to report misconduct and promote accountability within law enforcement agencies.
