What A 1229 does, verified January 8, 2026

The bill aims to protect wolves in the state by requiring the reporting and testing of wild canids taken in the state. Wild canids include coyotes and wolves, and those taken with a weight over 50 pounds or meeting additional criteria must be submitted to the department for genetic analysis. The analysis will be conducted by a reputable laboratory and the results will be made publicly available on the department's website. The department may also accept voluntarily submitted wild canids for genetic analysis. If a wild canid is determined to be a wolf, the department will attempt to determine its location and may take measures to protect additional wolves in the area. The bill requires a report on the status of wolves in the state to be submitted to the legislature by April 1, 2028, and recommends whether the wild canid testing program should continue.
