What A 1606 does, verified January 11, 2026

The proposed law aims to establish compulsory voting in the state. A person must be registered and enrolled to vote, with some exceptions. Registration is required at least 30 days before a general election. Voters are required to cast a ballot in person or by absentee ballot, with no obligation to vote. Failure to cast a ballot results in a $10 fine, which can be waived for valid excuses. The state board of elections will establish rules and regulations to carry out the law.
