What A 1743 does, verified January 9, 2026

The bill aims to recognize out-of-state or national defensive driving classes as valid alternatives to New York state-approved courses. It allows the state to approve courses from other states or countries, providing an option for drivers to complete a defensive driving course without having to take a New York state-approved course. The bill also requires the state to establish regulations for the approval and administration of these courses, including standards for instructors, classroom facilities, and course effectiveness. These regulations will ensure that approved courses meet certain requirements and standards. The bill takes effect immediately, but the provisions related to the recognition of out-of-state courses will not take effect until 90 days after the bill becomes a law.
