The Residential Structure Fire Prevention Act of 2025 aims to improve fire safety in residential buildings. The law provides a tax credit to homeowners who remove fire hazards commonly known as cocklofts, which are completely enclosed spaces between rafters and a suspended ceiling. Homeowners can claim a credit of up to $5,000 for removing these hazards. The law also requires insurance companies to reduce fire insurance premiums for properties equipped with smoke detecting alarm devices in cocklofts. Additionally, state agencies are required to include the repair of cocklofts as a qualifying expenditure in their housing programs to promote fire prevention and safety.
