A 2436: Authorizes a town with a population between 69,000 and 69,500 as of the 2020 decennial census to enact a homestead exemption.
The proposed law allows a town with a population between 69,000 and 69,500 to enact a homestead exemption by a local law. This exemption is similar to the basic school tax relief (star) exemption and is uniform for all eligible real property. The exemption amount is capped at $50,000 in full assessed value. Homeowners must apply for the exemption on a prescribed form and file it with the town assessor before the taxable status date. The law takes effect immediately and applies to assessment rolls based on taxable status dates occurring on or after the effective date.
