What A 2652 does, verified January 8, 2026

The proposed law aims to extend the timeline for landlords to return security deposits to tenants. Currently, landlords must return the deposit within 14 days of the tenant vacating the premises. The new law proposes to increase this timeline to 30 days. If a landlord fails to provide the tenant with an itemized statement of the deposit retention, if any, within 30 days, they will forfeit their right to retain any portion of the deposit. This change is intended to provide tenants with more time to receive their deposits and to hold landlords accountable for their obligations.
