A 335: Includes policies and procedures for responding to students having mental health crises in a manner that does not include contacting law enforcement unless implied or direct threats of violence or other criminal activity is involved in school safety plans.
The proposed law aims to enhance school safety by including policies and procedures for responding to students having mental health crises. It designates a district chief emergency officer to coordinate communication between school staff and law enforcement, and to ensure staff understanding of the district-level safety plan. The officer is also responsible for completing and updating building-level emergency response plans. Additionally, the law establishes protocols for responding to students with mental health crises, which do not involve contacting law enforcement unless there are implied or direct threats of violence or other criminal activity involved. These policies and procedures will take effect immediately.
