What A 3990 does, verified January 8, 2026

The bill aims to expand the definition of a public place to include community centers with a religious affiliation. This change is intended to provide greater protection for individuals who visit these centers from hate crimes and offenses against public order. The bill also updates the definition of a specified offense to include a broader range of crimes, such as stalking and sexual misconduct, to better reflect the complexity of modern crimes. Additionally, the bill removes the distinction between first and second-degree offenses for some crimes, aiming to provide more consistency in sentencing. The bill takes effect immediately.
