What A 4822 does, verified January 8, 2026

The bill amends two laws to provide benefits to volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers who contract COVID-19 while on duty during a state of emergency. If a volunteer firefighter or ambulance worker is exposed to COVID-19, their chief engineer or captain may authorize them to receive medical examinations, tests, and treatment without prior notice of injury. These individuals will be deemed injured and entitled to treatment, care, and disability benefits. The exposure to COVID-19 will be considered a presumptive cause of disability or death, unless proven otherwise, and will be deemed to have been caused by the natural and proximate result of exposure to COVID-19, not the worker's own negligence. The benefits will take effect immediately.
