A 4828: Improves the transportation of children with special needs to and from school; provides that bussing time shall not exceed one and one-half hours; provides a special needs liaison to work with each family with a child with special needs; makes related provisions.
The proposed law aims to provide free transportation for children with special needs between their homes and schools. The law requires school districts to have a Children with Special Needs Liaison to work with the child and family to ensure transportation requirements are met. Transportation time is limited to one and a half hours, including flexible wait times, and must be completed within this timeframe. If transportation cannot be completed within this timeframe, the school district must either reduce transportation time or reimburse the child's caretaker for transportation expenses. The transportation must include cameras and bus tracking systems to inform the child and family of the bus's arrival at the home. The law applies to minors with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
