New York · Assembly · 2025–2026 Legislative Session · last verified January 8, 2026

What A 5058 does, verified January 8, 2026

The bill proposes to change the date of the presidential primary to the same date as the state primaries. The current date for presidential primaries is the first Tuesday in June, but the bill suggests moving it to the same date as the state primaries, which is the fourth Tuesday in June. This change aims to align the presidential primary with the state primaries and make the process more efficient. The bill also eliminates the need for an additional primary election, known as the spring primary, which was previously held in February or June to elect delegates to the national convention.
