What A 5157 does, verified January 8, 2026
The proposed law aims to protect patients from additional fees for follow-up visits to receive opioid drug prescriptions. It prohibits insurance companies from imposing co-pays, co-insurance, or deductibles on patients who require a follow-up appointment to receive a refill of an opioid drug prescription. This prohibition is limited to one visit or one refill after the initial appointment or prescription. The law does not restrict subsequent consultations for the same pain, allowing practitioners to issue new prescriptions or renewals as needed. The law takes effect 90 days after it becomes a law.
