A 5175: Prohibits the manufacture, distribution, sale, or offering for sale of a baby monitor that broadcasts audio or video through an internet connection unless it includes certain security features to prevent unauthorized access; requires a written warning label; provides penalties.
The bill aims to improve the security of baby monitors sold in the state. It requires manufacturers to include certain security features and a warning label on their products. The security features must prevent unauthorized users from accessing or viewing the baby monitor's activity. The warning label must be displayed in a clear and easily understandable manner, warning consumers of the risks associated with an unsecured connection. Manufacturers are responsible for ensuring their products have the required security features. Anyone found in violation of the bill can face a civil penalty of up to $250 for a first offense and up to $500 for subsequent offenses. The bill allows local governments to enforce the law and retain the collected fines. The bill takes effect 90 days after it becomes a law.
