Assembly BillIntroduced

A 5231: Permits assistant district attorneys to live anywhere within the state.

New York · Assembly · 2025–2026 Legislative Session · last verified January 10, 2026

What A 5231 does, verified January 10, 2026

The bill proposes to amend the Public Officers Law to allow assistant district attorneys to live anywhere within the state, not just within the county or city they are chosen to serve. The current law requires public officials to reside within the political subdivision or municipal corporation where they are elected or serve. This bill would exempt assistant district attorneys from this requirement, allowing them to live anywhere in the state while still holding their office. The proposed change would take effect immediately.
