Assembly BillIntroduced
A 5257: Establishes the "Defund Municipalities that Defund the Police Act" which provides for a withholding of a certain amount of state funding for a defunding municipality.
What A 5257 does, verified January 9, 2026
The Defund Municipalities That Defund the Police Act aims to reduce police department budgets in municipalities that have defunded their police departments. These municipalities must not have reconstituted their police departments and must not have reduced their budgets due to financial constraints. The state will withhold a portion of the state funding received by these municipalities, equal to the percentage reduction in their police department budgets. The withheld funds will be reversed if the municipality reconstitutes its police department or meets the original criteria. The act will take effect immediately.
