What A 5314 does, verified July 2, 2025

The bill aims to amend the education law to change the transportation responsibility of city school districts in areas with a population of one million or more. Currently, students who live at least one mile from their school and attend grades 3-6, and at least half a mile from their school for grades K-2, are eligible for free transportation. The bill proposes to expand this eligibility to include students who attend grades K-6 and live at least one mile from their school for grades 3-6, and at least half a mile from their school for grades K-2, regardless of the distance from school for younger grades. The bill also seeks to change the reimbursement method for licensed transportation carriers providing transportation for eligible students.
