What A 5449 does, verified January 9, 2026

The bill aims to amend the not-for-profit corporation law to allow a funeral entity to add an additional retort to its crematory facility in the event of mechanical or technical failure of an existing retort. This addition would not affect the crematory's ability to operate as provided in the law. The new retort would be added "expressly and solely" for this purpose, and the funeral entity would still be required to comply with all applicable laws and regulations. The bill would take effect immediately.
