A 5460: Allows medical assistants to administer vaccines while under appropriate supervision of a physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant.
The bill aims to allow medical assistants to administer immunizations in outpatient office settings under certain conditions. Medical assistants must be at least 18 years old, complete an educational pathway approved by the department, and perform tasks authorized by department guidelines. A certified nurse practitioner can delegate immunization tasks to a medical assistant if the practitioner knows the assistant is qualified to perform the task. The bill also establishes guidelines for medical assistants administering immunizations, including receiving appropriate training and adequate supervision. The commissioner will determine these guidelines in consultation with the commissioner of education. The bill takes effect 180 days after becoming a law, and allows for the immediate implementation of necessary rules and regulations.
