What A 5508 does, verified January 8, 2026

The bill aims to amend the criminal procedure law to remove the requirement that willful failure to appear after notice of scheduled appearances be persistent in order to revoke an order granting liberty to a defendant. Currently, a defendant must persistently fail to appear to have their liberty revoked. The proposed change will allow the court to revoke an order granting liberty to a defendant if they willfully fail to appear, regardless of whether it's a persistent pattern. The bill also aims to fix bail in such action or proceeding. The changes will take effect on the first of November next succeeding the date upon which the bill becomes a law.
