What A 5612 does, verified January 9, 2026

The bill provides financial assistance to undergraduate students in New York who are members of volunteer fire companies. To be eligible, students must sign a contract with the corporation agreeing to work for a New York volunteer fire company on a full-time basis for five years. Awards can be granted to students who meet the eligibility requirements and are certified by the corporation. The awards are paid annually for up to four years of full-time undergraduate study and can cover up to 100% of the annual tuition charged to state resident students. If a student fails to meet the terms of the contract or is not found to be working for a New York volunteer fire company, the award can be converted into a student loan with interest.
