A 5734: Relates to licenses to carry and possess firearms for police officers; authorizes police officers to apply for a firearms license that is valid throughout the state.
The bill aims to improve the licensing process for police officers to carry and possess firearms. Applications for licenses will be processed within six months of submission, unless the licensing officer receives a written notice stating the reasons for the delay. Police officers who submit applications with a certification from their law enforcement agency stating they are in good standing will be presumptive evidence of their fitness and qualification to carry firearms. The licensing authority in counties with a population of less than one million will issue a license to carry and possess a pistol or revolver within sixty days of the application. The bill also clarifies that the term "police officer" refers to a police officer as defined in the criminal procedure law. The bill will take effect immediately.
