New York · Assembly · 2025–2026 Legislative Session · last verified April 21, 2026

What A 5768 does, verified April 21, 2026

The proposed law aims to clarify the right of way for all trail users, including bicyclists, in crosswalks where a multi-use trail crosses a roadway. A vehicle traveling on a roadway in a crosswalk must yield to any user of the multi-use trail crossing the roadway. This includes bicyclists, who are subject to the same limitations as pedestrians for crossing a roadway in a contiguous crosswalk. The law defines a multi-use trail as a trail established for recreation and transportation use by pedestrians, bicyclists, and others, regardless of the entity that owns or maintains it. The law takes effect immediately.
