The state of New York is requiring state agencies to prepare a plan to equip all their vehicles with an active intelligent speed assistance system. This system will use GPS to compare the vehicle's speed to posted speed limits and prevent the vehicle from accelerating once it exceeds a certain speed threshold. The system will be capable of being temporarily disabled by the driver. The plan must include a timeline for equipping all vehicles, with light-duty non-emergency vehicles to be equipped by December 31, 2027, and medium- and heavy-duty vehicles by December 31, 2028. The system will be required for all state agency vehicles, with interim targets for achieving full equipment by 2027 and 2028, respectively.
