A 6227: Removes citizenship as a qualification for holding public office in this state unless required by law.
The proposed law aims to amend the Public Officers Law to delete the citizenship requirement for holding civil office. Currently, a person must be a citizen of the United States, a resident of the state, and a resident of the political subdivision or municipal corporation for which they are chosen to hold a civil office. The proposed law would remove the citizenship requirement, allowing non-citizens to hold civil office if they meet other residency requirements. Additionally, the law would also remove the requirement that members of youth boards, youth commissions, and community boards in New York City must be at least 18 years old to hold office, allowing individuals under 18 to be appointed to these positions.
