A 6239: Authorizes and directs the state board of elections, in cooperation with county boards of elections, to create an online petitioning system for designating petitions; provides that use of such online petitioning system shall not preclude the collection and use of paper designating petitions; authorizes the state board of elections to promulgate necessary rules and regulations.
The proposed law would create an online petitioning system for designating candidates in various elections. This system would allow qualified voters to sign petitions for candidates running for offices such as the US Senate, House of Representatives, governor, and state legislature, as well as local offices. The system would verify the identity of voters and transmit signed petitions to the appropriate election officials. Candidates could choose to collect signatures through the online system, up to the required number, and paper petitions could still be used. The state board of elections would establish rules and regulations for the implementation of the system. The law would take effect immediately.
