A 6564: Requires drivers to create a center rescue lane on approach of authorized emergency vehicles.
The bill aims to amend the vehicle and traffic law to ensure the safety of emergency vehicles on the road. When an authorized emergency vehicle approaches, drivers of other vehicles are required to yield the right of way and move to a position parallel to the curb or edge of the roadway to create a clear path for the emergency vehicle. This includes moving to the left edge of the roadway in the leftmost lane, the right edge of the roadway in the rightmost lane, or towards the left or right in center lanes. On one-lane roadways, drivers are required to move as far to the right as possible until the emergency vehicle is passed. The bill also ensures that drivers of emergency vehicles are not relieved of their duty to drive with reasonable care for all highway users.
