New York · Assembly · 2025–2026 Legislative Session · last verified January 9, 2026

What A 6882 does, verified January 9, 2026

The proposed charter school application requirement amendment would change the rules for granting applications to charter schools in certain school districts. In a school district where the total enrollment of resident students attending charter schools exceeds five percent of the total public school enrollment, the application would need to demonstrate a significant educational benefit to the students expected to attend the proposed charter school. Additionally, the school district or a community school district in a city with a population of one million or more inhabitants must consent to the application. The changes would take effect immediately.
