What A 7551 does, verified January 8, 2026

The proposed law aims to limit the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's ability to set special open seasons for hunting wild deer. Currently, the department can set these seasons at any time during a specific period, but the proposed law would restrict this ability to a narrower timeframe, starting from the eleventh day after a regular open season for deer and ending on the third Sunday of December. The department would still have the authority to issue regulations for special seasons in specific counties or designated wildlife management units, but only after consulting with local governments and stakeholders. The proposed law would take effect immediately.
