A 7832: Provides that supervision by a licensed physical therapist of a physical therapist assistant shall be continuous but shall not require the physical presence of the licensed physical therapist at the time and place where services are being performed; requires a licensed physical therapist to be available for consultation with the physical therapist assistant or the patient within a reasonable amount of time.
The bill aims to amend the education law to clarify the role of physical therapist assistants. A physical therapist assistant is defined as a licensed professional who works under the direction and supervision of a licensed physical therapist, performing patient-related activities such as therapy sessions. The assistant's duties do not include evaluation, testing, or planning patient care. The supervisor must be available for consultation with the assistant or patient within a reasonable time, and the number of assistants supervised by one therapist must not exceed a ratio of four to one, as determined by the commissioner's regulations. The bill also allows hospitals to employ physical therapist assistants under the supervision of designated therapists, as long as their scope of practice is not exceeded. The changes take effect one year after the bill becomes a law.
