What A 845 does, verified May 21, 2026

The proposed law aims to establish school speed limits on state highways outside cities with a population over one million. The law allows the Department of Transportation to set higher or lower maximum speed limits, with a minimum of 25 miles per hour, except for school speed limits, which can be set at 15 miles per hour or lower. School speed limits can be established by the Department of Transportation or by local legislative bodies for a distance of up to 1,320 feet near school buildings, entrances, or exits. The absence of speed limit signs on highways is considered presumptive evidence that the Department of Transportation has not established a higher maximum speed limit than the standard 55 miles per hour limit. The law takes effect on the first of November next succeeding the date it becomes a law.
