A 8627: Changes the discount rate for structured judgments in medical malpractice actions.
What A 8627 does, verified January 8, 2026
The bill aims to change the discount rate used in determining the present value of payments in medical malpractice cases. The discount rate for payments up to twenty years will be based on the ten-year US Treasury bond rate on the date of the verdict. For payments exceeding twenty years, the rate will be calculated by averaging the ten-year Treasury bond rate for the first twenty years and two percentage points above the thirty-year Treasury bond rate on the date of the verdict. The bill takes effect immediately and applies to verdicts entered on or after the effective date.
