What A 8645 does, verified September 28, 2025

The bill provides a 75% accidental disability retirement benefit to the surviving spouse of a former deputy sheriff who participated in the World Trade Center rescue, recovery, and cleanup operations and was later deemed permanently incapacitated due to his participation. The benefit is payable from the date of retirement, and all costs associated with implementing the act are borne by the county where the deputy sheriff was employed. This change allows the surviving spouse to receive a higher percentage of the decedent's final average salary, retroactive to the date of retirement, rather than the current joint allowance.
