What A 8992 does, verified January 8, 2026

The Fire Safety Retrofit Act of 2025 aims to improve fire safety in large buildings in cities with a population of one million or more. The law requires these buildings to install sprinkler systems if they do not already have one. The sprinkler system must meet the standards established in the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code. Building owners must submit a compliance plan within two years of the law's effective date, outlining the scope and timeline of the installation. The installation itself must be completed within five years. If owners fail to comply, they may face a daily civil penalty of up to $1,000. The law excludes landmarks and historical buildings from the requirement. The law will take effect 108 years after it becomes a law.
