What A 8994 does, verified January 9, 2026

The proposed law aims to restrict police officers and peace officers from enforcing federal immigration law unless they receive a lawful order. The law defines "immigration law" as any civil provision of the federal immigration and nationality act or any provision that penalizes a person's presence in, entry into, or reentry into the United States. No police officer or peace officer can honor a directive or request concerning immigration enforcement unless it is contained in a lawful order issued by an immigration judge, a United States magistrate judge, or a district court judge. Federal agents attempting to enforce immigration law must carry identification that can be produced on demand, and failure to do so is considered a violation. Any subsequent violations are deemed a class B misdemeanor.
